Sunday - August 9th - Santiago

Today we visited a couple of Chilean wineries in the morning and then came back to the city to visit the Museo de la Memoria y los humanos derechos.  (Museum of the memory of the rights of humans) It was incredibly well done!  Through the exhibits we were able to learn all about how Pinochet came to power, the countless acts of violence during his regime, and the aftermath.  It was really amazing!  I wish I could have taken pictures, but it wasn't allowed!  As we were moving through the exhibit, I kept thinking how during the 70's and 80's, I was just living my life...and countless numbers of people were suffering!  Thousands of people were forced to leave Chile, simply because they disagreed with the regime.  Over 20,000 people were "missing."  "Camps" were located all over the country - hauntingly similar to the Holocaust.  One of the most disturbing exhibits was on children during this time.  Thousands of children were arrested as political prisoners!!!  They were tortured, forced to work in camps, and in many cases executed!  Such an unbelievable tragedy!!!!  Why do we as human beings continue to be so cruel to one another?????  I really cannot begin to fathom such injustice and cruelty!!!  We all have to be aware of what is happening in our world...and be willing to stand up and have a voice for those who's voice in silenced...wherever they may be!
